Today, Emily requested that I make a design for a monthly recipe card. This card is planned to be used at the cooking demonstration and to be left in the food pantry for all those interested. Unfortunately, this required a quick turnaround and I did not get to work on the design as much as I had planned. Regardless, I got it done and sent that order off to print. As for the demonstration itself, all the advertising I have been doing for the event has paid off. We hit our maximum sign-up limit 2 weeks ahead of schedule. This has led Emily + my supervisor to start talking about making this a recurring event and possibly creating its own brand. I am super excited for what the future holds regarding this.

Last week, I sent in the final copy of the Cooking Demonstration cards off to print, after making sure everything was perfect. When they were delivered this morning, we realized the print shop made a huge error and printed the cards in grayscale. Luckily for us, they were delivered ahead of schedule and the printer said they would still have the corrected version back to us before Fall Fest, which is when we planned on handing them out. Crisis Averted. Other than the little blip in our plans, I worked on edits for the Mental Health Department. They wanted cards to help advertise their relationship seminars. Hopefully, those will be off to print in no time.
After showing Emily my initial sketches, she really liked them. I put my most successful idea into the computer to have a digital comp of it. Sending that off the her, I got her approval for the design with a couple of minor changes--she wanted the fork and spoon to turn into a whisk and chopping knife. I will be working on those edits today to prepare it for print.
Although I am still working on switching the website to OMNI, I met with our department's dietitian, Emily Fields. She introduced me to a new assignment she wanted me to get started with. The LSU Food Pantry is doing a collaboration with the SHC to create a food demonstration for students utilizing the pantry. She requested to have me design printed cards advertising the event. She also wanted a template for a "recipe of the month" card. Today, I spent most of the day brainstorming for the cards, which have a very short deadline for this Friday.
Since yesterday was a holiday, I had a good amount of work to catch up on. As I mentioned before, our department is in the process of transferring our website from Dreamweaver to Omni. This means that I have been very busy bringing the old files into the new platform before launch. I will be spending the next couple of days working on this until the launch date comes.
Today I received an e-mail from Dr. John Otzenberger, the director at the Mental Health Department. The team has decided to hold multiple group therapy events for students affected by the recent Louisiana flooding. He requested to have 250 hand-out cards designed and printed along with a website banner and update. I designed both the hand-out and banner and sent the cards off to print. I also added a new page to the SHC website through Dreamweaver to inform our students of the event.
Since the Office of Wellness and Health Promotion has made the big move, we needed to spread the news to the LSU community. Today, my supervisor had me design a simple graphic to post across multiple platforms. Unfortunately, people were only reading the headline for the original design. I made an edit that emphasized that ONLY the Office of Wellness and Health had moved--this seemed to be more effective and clear.
Hi Everyone!
My name is Taylor White and this is the chronicle of my internship experience at the LSU Student Health Center. As of today, I have been a part of the team since mid-summer 2016. I was hired originally as the Graphic Designer, but a couple of weeks ago, my boss accepted a job in another State. Currently, I am juggling the responsibility of designer and interim Communications Coordinator. During this hectic switch, the Student Health Center underwent some changes because of the tragic fire we faced. My department, the Office of Wellness and Health, made a move to the Student Union. Although things have gotten pretty crazy around here, I have received some nice perks like my own office and multiple computers. It has also allowed me to develop a nice relationship with the people in the department and given me an incredible amount of experience. My day-to-day responsibilities include designing all the artwork for things like campaigns, banners on the websites, social media content, and print materials. I am also responsible for all print orders. As communications coordinator, I am responsible for keeping in touch with other heads of departments, updating the website using Dreamweaver, sending off monthly department initiatives, and managing all social media accounts. As the student worker, I am sometimes responsible for administrative work, such as answering phone calls, making appointments, and answering e-mails. The department itself handles topics such as sexual health, stress management, eating disorders, relationship skills, and drug/alcohol usage. Currently, our department has 8 employees, including me. Although we are small, we have been able to create great interpersonal relationships and a very productive department overall. As I continue my journey with the Student Health Center, I hope I will be able to grow as a designer, and continue to learn skills to work in a professional environment. |
